***get sweaty***

Sweating is a great way to detox! Our skin is the largest organ of the body with a total area of about 20 square feet. WOW! And how does the skin help detox the body?? SWEAT! When we sweat our body is able to rid itself of toxins such as heavy metals. However, we also lose minerals that we need. Make sure to rehydrate after each sweat sess. Coconut water is a great option because it replenishes potassium that may have been lost. Nuts, whole grains  and legumes are a great way to load up on other minerals such as zinc, copper, selenium and chromium. There are sooo many ways to sweat so you can switch up your workouts day to day. Walking, running, power or hot yoga, jump roping, lifting, or even hopping in a sauna or steam room.

Our skin has pores that allows toxins to move out of the body, but it also can let a lot of toxins enter the body. This is wear our skin care and beauty products come in. SO many chemical are used in products that we don’t even realize. We often forget that even though we aren’t consuming the chemicals, they certainly can be absorbed into the body. In fact, about 60 percent of what we put on our skin gets absorbed. Here are some names you should familiarize yourself with and start checking labels!

  1. Mineral Oil- Sounds natural right? WRONG- a highly processed by-product of petroleum

  2. Aluminum- Toxin metal that can mess with our hormones

  3. DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine)- Used to foam products but NO BUENO for you

  4. DMDM Hyantoin & Urea- Preservatives that often release formaldehyde 😷

  5. Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl)- Preservatives linked to hormone imbalances and breast cancer.

  6. Phalates- Used to cling fragrance to your skin. Linked to hormone issues and low sperm count.

  7. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laurenth Sulfate (SLES)- Used to foam products. Linked to cancer.

  8. Triclosan- Synthetic antibacterial agent linked to thyroid disorders and cancer.

  9. PEG (Polyethylene glycol)- Thickening agent for products that strips your skin of moisture.

  10. Propylene Glycol (PG) & Butylene Glycol- Found in herbal extracts. Quickly penetrates the skin and weaken proteins and cellular structure.

Check your skin care, hair products, laundry detergents, make up and cleaning products! There are plenty of natural brands out there! Not to mention making your own! Cleaning products are super easy to mix and eco friendly.

There are also apps you can use to easily see if products are natural - Think DirtyGood GuideComsEthics.

One last note- be kind to the animals! Grab products that have a cruelty free sign! Bunny Free is a great app to see if products are vegan and cruelty free!
